Know your numbers before you scale
Profitable D2C growth starts with three numbers: your gross margin after product, packaging and shipping; the most you can pay to get a first order (your target cost per acquisition); and how many customers buy again. Without these, ads can grow revenue while quietly losing money.
Meta ads: where many Indian D2C brands find new customers
Instagram and Facebook are good at showing products to people who didn't know they wanted them. For many brands, broad targeting that lets Meta's algorithm find buyers works well when combined with plenty of creative variations. The creative, more than the targeting, usually decides results.
- Short videos showing the product in use
- Customer reviews and unboxing (with permission)
- Founder or behind-the-scenes stories
- Clear offers and benefits in the first two seconds
Google: Shopping, Performance Max and search
Google captures people already searching for your type of product. Shopping and Performance Max campaigns need a clean product feed in Google Merchant Center: good titles, accurate prices and stock, and quality images. Brand search campaigns protect your name from competitors bidding on it.
Tracking: Pixel, Conversions API and GA4
Browser tracking alone misses some purchases because of ad blockers and privacy settings. Set up the Meta Conversions API alongside the Pixel, Google's enhanced conversions and GA4 purchase events, so the platforms learn from as many real orders as possible.
Cash on delivery and return-to-origin
COD is still popular in India, but undelivered COD orders (RTO) can wipe out profit. Confirming COD orders on WhatsApp, offering a small prepaid incentive and watching RTO rates by pin code help keep this under control.
The website has to convert
Fast mobile pages, clear product photos and videos, reviews near the buy button, honest delivery times and a simple checkout with UPI make every ad rupee go further. Test one change at a time and measure the conversion rate.
Repeat customers are where the profit is
The first order often only breaks even; profit comes from the second and third. Use WhatsApp and email (with customer consent) for order updates, abandoned-cart reminders, refill reminders and new launches, and keep the messages useful rather than constant.
