What the map pack is, and why it matters
Search for "dentist near me" or "interior designer in Raj Nagar Extension" and Google shows a map with three businesses above the regular results. That block is called the local pack. For many local businesses it brings more calls than their website does.
Google says local results are based mainly on three things: relevance (how well your profile matches the search), distance (how close you are to the searcher) and prominence (how well known and trusted your business is). You can't move your shop, but you can improve the other two.
Step 1: Claim and verify your Google Business Profile
Search for your business name on Google Maps. If a profile exists, claim it; if not, create one at business.google.com. Verification can be by phone, email, video or postcard depending on what Google offers you.
Step 2: Fill in every field
An incomplete profile is the most common reason a business doesn't show up. Make sure you have:
- The right primary category (be specific, such as "Dental clinic" rather than "Clinic") and relevant secondary categories
- Exact business name as it appears on your signboard, without stuffed keywords
- Address, service areas, phone number and website
- Opening hours, including special hours for festivals and holidays
- Services or products with short descriptions
- A clear business description that says what you do and where
- Real photos of your shop, office, team and work, added regularly
Step 3: Keep your NAP identical everywhere
NAP means Name, Address and Phone. It should be written the same way on your website, Google Business Profile, Facebook, Instagram, Justdial, Sulekha, IndiaMART and any other listing. Small differences ("Shop 5" vs "Shop No. 5", an old phone number) make it harder for Google to trust which details are right.
Step 4: Get reviews, steadily and honestly
Reviews are one of the strongest signals for local ranking and for whether a searcher calls you. Ask every happy customer, ideally right after the job is done. A short WhatsApp message with your review link works well.
Reply to every review, good or bad, politely and within a few days. Never buy reviews or offer discounts in exchange for them; it breaks Google's policies and can get reviews removed or the profile suspended.
Step 5: Build local pages on your website
Your website should clearly say where you work. Put your full address and a map on the contact page, mention the areas you serve, and if you genuinely serve several cities, create a useful page for each one. Avoid copying the same page and swapping the city name; Google treats that as low-quality.
Step 6: Add LocalBusiness schema
Schema markup is code that tells Google your business name, address, phone, opening hours and service area in a format it reads directly. Most modern website platforms can add it; your developer or agency should check it with Google's Rich Results Test.
Step 7: Get listed on trusted local directories
Listings on well-known directories (often called citations) help confirm that your business is real and where you say it is. For Indian businesses, start with Justdial, Sulekha, IndiaMART (for B2B), Bing Places and Apple Business Connect, plus any industry directories that matter in your field.
Step 8: Post updates and answer questions
Use Google Business Profile posts to share offers, new work and events. Check the Questions & Answers section and answer what people ask. An active profile signals that the business is open and cares about customers.
Step 9: Track what's working
Your Business Profile Performance tab shows searches, calls, direction requests and website clicks. Add UTM tags to your profile's website link so visits from Maps show up separately in Google Analytics.
How long does local SEO take?
A complete, verified profile with good photos can start appearing for your own name and nearby searches within weeks. Competing for broader searches in a busy area like Indirapuram, Noida Sector 18 or Laxmi Nagar takes steady work on reviews, content and citations over several months.
