Why your Business Profile matters more than your website for local searches
When someone in Ghaziabad searches for "dentist near me" or "interior designer in Raj Nagar Extension", Google usually shows a map with three businesses before any website. Those three get most of the calls, direction requests and WhatsApp messages.
That map listing comes from your Google Business Profile (earlier called Google My Business). It's free, and for many local businesses it brings more enquiries than the website itself. Yet many profiles are half-filled: wrong category, an old phone number, a few blurry photos and no posts in a year.
1. Get the basics exactly right
Google trusts a business more when its name, address and phone number match everywhere: your profile, website, Justdial, Facebook and other listings. Check these first:
- Business name: your real name as on your signboard, without extra keywords stuffed in (that can get the profile suspended)
- Address: the same format everywhere, including office or shop number and landmark
- Phone: a number that is answered during business hours, ideally the same one on your website
- Hours: real hours, plus special hours for festivals and holidays
- Website: a link to your homepage or the most relevant page
2. Choose the right primary category
The primary category is one of the strongest signals Google uses to decide which searches you appear for. Pick the most specific one that describes your main service, such as "Dental clinic" rather than "Doctor", or "Interior designer" rather than "Contractor".
Then add a few secondary categories for other things you genuinely offer. Look at the top three businesses in the map results for your main search to see which categories they use.
3. Fill in services, products and the description
Add each service you offer with a short, plain description. Customers read these, and they help Google understand what you do. Products work well for shops, salons and clinics with clear packages.
Your business description (up to 750 characters) should say what you do, who you help, which areas you serve and why someone should choose you. Write it for people, not for search engines.
4. Add real photos, and keep adding them
Profiles with recent, genuine photos tend to get more clicks and direction requests. Avoid stock images. Add:
- The outside of your shop or office with the signboard, so people can find you
- Inside: reception, work area, waiting area
- Your team at work (with their permission)
- Finished work: projects, products, before-and-after (with client permission)
- A logo and a cover photo
5. Post updates every week
Google Posts show on your profile and tell both customers and Google that the business is active. Share an offer, a new service, a tip, a festival greeting or a recent project once a week, with a photo and a button to call or book.
6. Build a steady flow of genuine reviews
Reviews affect both your ranking and whether people choose you. Ask every happy customer, send them your direct review link on WhatsApp, and reply to every review within a couple of days, good or bad. Never buy reviews or write your own; Google removes them and can restrict your profile.
We've written a separate guide on how to get more Google reviews the right way.
7. Turn on messaging and track what the profile brings
Add your WhatsApp or chat link where available, answer common questions in the Q&A section, and check the Performance tab monthly: searches, calls, website clicks and direction requests. If calls drop, look at what changed: hours, photos, a new competitor or fewer reviews.
Common mistakes that hold profiles back
These are the problems we see most often on Ghaziabad business profiles:
- Two profiles for the same business (duplicates split your reviews and confuse Google)
- An old phone number still showing after a change was submitted
- Keywords stuffed into the business name
- A home address shown for a service-area business that should hide it
- No reply to negative reviews
How long before you see more calls?
Fixing the basics can make a difference within a few weeks, but ranking higher on Google Maps usually takes steady work over a few months: reviews, posts, photos and consistent listings across the web. Distance from the searcher also matters, and no one can change that or guarantee a position.
