How to Get More Google Reviews for Your Local Business (Without Breaking the Rules)

Reviews decide who gets the call. Here's a simple system to ask every happy customer, the right way, and reply well.

Why reviews matter so much

When people compare two clinics, salons or agencies on Google Maps, the number of reviews, the star rating and how recent the reviews are often decide who gets the call. Reviews are also one of the signals Google uses to rank local businesses.

The good news: most happy customers are willing to leave a review. They just need to be asked at the right moment, with an easy link.

Step 1: Get your direct review link

Open your Google Business Profile, choose "Ask for reviews" (or "Get more reviews") and copy the short link. Anyone who opens it lands straight on the review box, with no searching. Save it somewhere your whole team can use it.

Step 2: Ask at the right moment

The best time to ask is right after the customer feels the benefit: after a successful treatment, when a project is handed over, when a student clears a test or when a customer thanks you. Asking weeks later rarely works.

Step 3: Make it personal and short

A short WhatsApp message usually works better than a printed card. For example:

  • "Hi [Name], thank you for choosing us! If you're happy with our work, could you spare a minute to leave a Google review? It really helps a local business like ours: [link]"
  • Hindi works just as well for many customers: "नमस्ते [Name] जी, अगर आप हमारी सेवा से खुश हैं, तो कृपया 1 मिनट निकालकर Google पर review लिखें: [link]"

Step 4: Make it a habit, not a campaign

Ten reviews in one day followed by nothing for six months looks unnatural and doesn't help much. Aim for a steady few reviews every week. Put the request into your process: a reminder for the front desk, a message after each delivery, or an automatic WhatsApp message a day after the service.

Step 5: Reply to every review

Thank people by name for positive reviews and mention what you did for them. For negative reviews, stay calm, apologise for the experience, and offer to sort it out by phone. Future customers read your replies as closely as the reviews themselves.

What not to do

Google's rules are strict, and breaking them can get reviews removed or your profile restricted:

  • Don't offer discounts, gifts or money in exchange for reviews
  • Don't write reviews yourself or ask staff and family to pose as customers
  • Don't buy reviews from any service
  • Don't send the review link only to happy customers while steering unhappy ones elsewhere (called review gating)
  • Don't ask customers to leave reviews on a shared device in your shop

Can automation help?

Yes, within the rules. A simple automation can send the review link on WhatsApp or email after an appointment or delivery, and one reminder a few days later if the customer hasn't responded. It only asks; the customer decides. We set this up as part of our marketing automation work.

FAQ

Quick answers

You can't delete reviews yourself. You can report reviews that break Google's policies (spam, offensive content, not a real customer). For genuine negative reviews, a calm, helpful reply is the best response.

There's no fixed number. Look at the businesses in the top three map results for your main search and aim to steadily build a similar or larger number of recent reviews.

Replies show customers and Google that the business is active and cares. Most of all, they help people choose you.
