Why SEO quotes vary so much
Ask five providers in India for an SEO quote and you'll get five very different numbers. That doesn't always mean someone is overcharging. "SEO" can mean anything from a few automated reports to a team rewriting your pages, fixing your site and building your reputation.
So the useful question isn't only "how much?" It's "what exactly will be done each month, by whom, and how will I know it's working?"
What decides the price
These are the things that move an SEO quote up or down:
- Competition: ranking for a neighbourhood service is very different from ranking for a national keyword
- Area: one city, several cities or all of India
- Site size and condition: a 10-page site is simpler than a 500-product store with technical problems
- Content: how many pages and articles need to be written, and by whom
- Local work: Google Business Profile, reviews and directory listings
- Links: genuine outreach takes real time
- Experience: who actually works on your account
Common pricing models
In India you'll usually see one of these:
- Monthly retainer: a fixed fee for ongoing work. The most common model, because SEO builds up over months
- One-time project: a site audit, a technical clean-up or a local setup, with a clear end point
- Hourly or per-task: useful for small jobs or expert advice
- "Pay only for rankings": sounds safe, but check which keywords count. Ranking for words nobody searches is easy and worthless
What a fair SEO quote should include
Whatever the price, a good proposal is specific. Look for:
- A list of work for each month, not just "on-page and off-page SEO"
- Target searches chosen for your business, with reasons
- Technical fixes for speed, mobile and indexing
- Content: how many pieces, on what topics, and who writes them
- Local SEO, if you serve a specific area
- Reports showing enquiries and traffic, not just rankings
- Access to your own Search Console, Analytics and Business Profile
Red flags that a cheap quote is expensive later
Low prices often mean shortcuts that can harm your site. Be careful if you hear:
- "Guaranteed number one on Google." No one can promise that
- "500 backlinks a month." Bulk links can get a site penalised
- "We can't share what we do, it's secret." You should be able to see the work
- AI-generated articles published in bulk with no human review
- The agency keeps your accounts in its own name
- A long lock-in before you've seen any progress
How long before SEO pays off?
SEO usually takes a few months to show meaningful results, and competitive searches take longer. Local businesses in a smaller area often see movement sooner, especially on Google Maps. If you need enquiries this week, pair SEO with Google Ads while it builds.
How to compare quotes fairly
Put two or three proposals side by side and compare the work, not just the fee. Ask each provider what they would fix first on your website and why. The answer tells you more than the price does.
